About this Piece

This piece was created in an attempt to understand the uncanny valley and how it functions. Videos of real human faces were layered over AI generated animations of faces. The audio aspect references the Turing Test, created by Alan Turing, which consists of questions designed to confuse artificial intelligence. They are asked through a text interface by a human proctor and the responses are used to guess whether the responder is human or a computer. While the video seems to discuss AI and robotics, this facet of the piece was used to reference this difficulty in discerning the human and inhuman, a central idea that is believed to be why objects resting in the uncanny valley evoke so much discomfort in humans.
